Ajora was a revolutionary, an ambitious man who loved peace and freedom more than anything else. With the coming of Ajora, all of that changed. The Yudora Empire ruled over all of Ivalice, and the Church of Fara was at the height of its power. It was a golden age of prosperity, when airships soared across the sky and man created wondrous machines to serve him. Then, 1,600 years ago, a man named Ajora Glabados was born in the Free City of Bervenia in the kingdom of Lesalia. Furthermore, if they could find a way to resurrect their leader, the Bloody Angel Altima, they wouldn’t need the stones or host bodies, and could come and go as they pleased. Through these stones, they could find host bodies to possess, enabling them to manifest in our world. They used their dark powers to corrupt six of the Zodiac Stones, turning them into possible links to Earth. They were called the Zodiac Braves, and ever since that time, it has been said that whenever humanity is attacked, the twelve Zodiac Braves will return, save the world, then vanish once again.īut the Lucavi did not accept defeat that easily. These crystals, called “Zodiac Stones,” gave the warriors the power they needed to defeat the Lucavi and banish them to Hades, finally bringing peace to the war-torn land. For a time, all was darkness… until at last, twelve warriors appeared, each holding a magical crystal engraved with one of the twelve zodiac symbols. Then, free from the bonds of the king’s summoning, the Lucavi turned their diabolical attentions to the rest of the world. But the Lucavi ultimately proved too powerful for him to control… eventually, they turned on the king and slew him. But despite the size and strength of his forces, the road to victory was far more difficult than the king had anticipated… and so, he decided to call for… “reinforcements.” Using a secret method found in an ancient book, the king summoned an evil group of Demons known as the Lucavi, hoping to use their power to aid him in his conquest. When this king rose to power, he marshaled an army large enough to cover all of Ivalice and claim it in his name. For hundreds of years, these seven kingdoms vied for control of territory, until one day, an ambitious king was born on the island of Murond. In an age long past, when the Earth was still young and wild, the land of Ivalice was divided into seven small kingdoms: Zeltennia, Fovoham, Lionel, Limberry, Lesalia, Gallione, and Murond. Therefore, we begin not with the Lion War itself, but with a journey all the way back to the time of legends… As with any piece of history, the first step to understanding this conflict is to understand its historical context, including all of the pertinent events that led up to its occurrence. Durai, and I am a historian seeking the truth about the conflict known as the Lion War. It was one of the more complicated write-ups I’ve ever had to do, and required a little bit of interpretation, so hopefully it came out all right. Also, I wrote this write-up from the perspective of the game’s narrator, the historian Alazlam, mostly because it was fun, but also because it made a lot of sense to do so, all things considered. I’m told that most of the name changes were unnecessary anyway. Since I haven’t played it, this write-up uses the names of the original version. I hear they redid the translation, and as a result, a lot of names were changed. It was recently updated for the PSP as Final Fantasy Tactics: War of the Lions, but I don’t have a PSP yet, so I’m not familiar with that version. Final Fantasy Tactics was the first game set in the world of Ivalice and is the third game in the Ivalice Alliance timeline, after Final Fantasy XII and Revenant Wings. (Hoo, boy… I’ve got a lot to say about this one. Ramza Beoulve, Mercenary and Heretic of Gallione
